Voting rights
- Were enforced by the 15th amendment. There were many restrictions that prevented African Americans from voting which were poll taxes and literacy tests
Civil Rights Act
- Segregation on the grounds on race, religion and nationality were banned
-John F. Kennedy proposed the Civil Rights Act
- Kennedy was assassinated, however Lyndon Johnson took over. The vote took awhile because when it reached the Senate it had problems, however it was eventually passed.
Fair Housing Act
- First passed in 1968
- It was intended to protect the buyer or renter of a dwelling from seller or landlord discrimination
Little Rock Nine
- A group of nine African Americans challenged racial segregation in public schools
- This happened after the Brown v. Board of Education case
- This sparked outrage in the civil rights movement and challenged the power of of the state and federal government
-Little Rock schools shut down and reopened in 1960
Anti- Civil Rights
Bull Connor
- Was a southern democrat and politician
- He protested the civil rights movement
-He never took action in ending the racial bombings in Birmingham
- He is said to have been in a plan to murder Shuttlesworth
- He refused police protection for freedom rides
- He was eventually removed from office
Medgar Evers
- He was an African American Civil Rights leader
- He was a WWII veteran
- He was shot to death in his driveway by a white klansman
Assassination of Robert Kennedy

- He was committed to helping African Americans win the right to vote and attend integrated schools
- He helped end discrimination in Public accommodations
-He was fatally shot on June 5th by Sirhan Sirhan
